The Cruiser

To see them in your rearview mirror
When they're right behind you
Is to feel the slender fingers of terror
Closing in around you
Just the very sight of them
Bearing down upon you
Strikes fear in even the bravest of men
When they find themselves surrounded
Clean as a whistle and sober as a church mouse
Red and blue lights nevertheless make you nervous
Flying down the road, no drugs in the vehicle
Papers intact, you're a legal eagle
From out of nowhere flashing lights appear
The cruiser's hungry, hulking leer
Garish and blinding, stark and insistent
Repetitious and redundant
Paranoia rears its unreasonable head
As you pull off to the side
Shaking fingers wipe the sweat from your head
As the cruiser drives on by instead
