A Mother's Lament

I know that I may have let you down

And I haven't always been around

When you really needed me

I know you feel as if you've been cheated

Out of some of the things that you really needed

That I couldn't give to you

At times, I know that we've been lonely and scared

And it seemed like nobody even cared

But we always had each other

Sometimes I may seem to be confused

Not knowing which road I should choose

Or what is the right thing to do

It seems to me that I've made a lot of mistakes

Had much more than my share of tough breaks

And troubles in my time

You have stayed by my side

And you've kept me alive

Simply by needing my love

Words cannot thank you enough

For you've always stood tough

Never too far from my side

And I'll be here for you

Whatever you do

Until the day that I die
